Short answer

A university degree is not usually required to become a pilot. Airlines normally focus more on licences, medical fitness, English, training quality and experience.

Answer

Direct answer: A university degree is not usually required to become a pilot. The core requirements are the correct pilot licence, medical certificate, training record, English language ability and the right to work in the country where you apply.

What airlines usually look for

  • Airlines normally care most about whether you meet their licence and operational requirements. For an airline-track First Officer role, that can include a Commercial Pilot Licence, instrument rating, multi-engine rating, ATPL theory credits, MCC or APS MCC training, and sometimes a type rating.
  • Variation: Some airlines, cadet programmes or regions may prefer applicants with a degree, and a few may require one. This is more common in certain major airline or sponsored training pathways than in the basic legal requirements for becoming a pilot.
  • Definition: A degree can still be useful. It may strengthen your application, give you a backup career option and help later if you move into management, training, safety or aviation business roles. But for most pilot candidates, the priority is to pass the medical, choose the right training route and build strong flying competence.

When a degree can help

  • The bigger issue for most candidates is not the degree requirement, but competitiveness. Airline selection usually tests aptitude, technical understanding, communication, teamwork, situational awareness and decision-making. A degree will not compensate for weak flying performance or poor interview preparation.
  • If you are choosing between university and direct flight training, compare time, debt and risk. Some aviation degrees include flight training, while others are mostly academic and still require separate flying costs.
  • For school leavers, the key question is usually whether a degree is worth delaying flight training. There is no universal answer. It depends on finances, local airline preferences and how much risk you want to carry if the aviation market slows.
