Train as a Flight Service air traffic control specialist for Alaska. You start with intensive basics at the FAA Academy, then continue at the Alaska Flight Service Training Academy in Kenai with classroom and lab simulations focused on preflight briefings, inflight assistance and pilot support. Training is progressive with pay increases at each benchmark, and trainees receive long-term per diem while attending the Kenai academy. After successful completion and all requirements, candidates are considered for permanent placement at FAA Flight Service Stations across Alaska.

The FAA is the U.S. civil aviation regulator and service provider responsible for the safety and efficiency of the National Airspace System. Its Air Traffic Organization runs en-route centers, terminal facilities and Flight Service Stations that deliver pilot briefings, flight plan services and inflight assistance. Alaska is the only region with federal Flight Service Stations, supported by a dedicated training academy in Kenai. FAA operations are nationwide with international offices that back technical and training missions.  

Requirements

• U.S. citizenship and Selective Service registration for males born after 12/31/1959  • Ability to pass the Air Traffic Skills Assessment (ATSA) and a pre-employment medical that includes psychological screening; drug testing and public-trust background investigation required  • Willingness to work at any FAA Flight Service Station in Alaska; irregular or nonstandard shifts may be required  • Minimum qualifications: meet one of the listed pathways such as a full 4-year bachelor’s degree, one year of progressively responsible work experience, qualifying specialized ATC experience, or the stated alternative credentials set by FAA (for example instrument rating, dispatcher certificate, or prior navigator qualification)  • Prior ATC experience is not required; failure to complete academy or field training results in separation
