What are the main responsibilities of cabin crew during a flight?

Cabin crew are safety crew first. Their main responsibility is to protect passengers and support the safe operation of the flight. Service is important, but it comes after safety duties.

Safety duties first: Before departure, cabin crew check emergency equipment, prepare the cabin, brief passengers, secure galleys and make sure exits, aisles and seats are ready for takeoff. During boarding, they also monitor passenger behaviour, seating issues, baggage storage and any signs of illness or intoxication.

During the flight, cabin crew monitor the cabin, respond to passenger needs, serve food and drinks, manage conflicts, support vulnerable passengers and follow the airline's service procedures. They also remain alert for smoke, unusual smells, medical problems, turbulence risks or security concerns.

In an emergency, cabin crew may fight fires, give first aid, manage decompression procedures, prepare the cabin for an emergency landing, command an evacuation and operate life rafts or other survival equipment.

At the end of the flight, they secure the cabin for landing, assist passengers during disembarkation and report safety or service issues to the crew and airline.

Cabin crew also coordinate closely with the flight deck. They pass information to pilots about medical issues, smoke, disruptive passengers, cabin defects and anything that could affect safety or the conduct of the flight.

On larger aircraft, senior cabin crew or pursers manage the cabin team, allocate duties and act as the main link with the Captain. After the flight, reports may be required for safety events, passenger incidents, medical cases or equipment defects.

This mix of safety, service and coordination is why cabin crew training is strict. A crew member must be able to switch from a calm service routine to an emergency role immediately.
